The City Beneath Your Feet

When you visit Myra and see the theatre and the rock-cut tombs, you're seeing the survivors — the structures that endured because they're carved into or built against the mountain. The actual city — the streets where people walked, the temple where they worshipped, the agora where they traded, the baths where they socialized — is buried under 5 to 7 metres of river sediment beneath the modern town of Demre. Archaeologists estimate that what visitors see today represents perhaps 15 to 20 percent of the ancient city.

The reason for this extraordinary burial lies in geology. The Demre River — known in antiquity as the Myros — flows down from the Taurus Mountains, carrying alluvial sediment that has accumulated in the Demre plain over millennia. This natural process was dramatically accelerated by seismic events, particularly the devastating earthquakes of 141 CE and 1044 CE. Each quake triggered landslides from the surrounding mountains, dumping enormous volumes of earth and rock into the valley. Over the centuries, the ancient ground level rose steadily. What was once a street-level doorway became a first-floor window, then a rooftop, then nothing visible at all. The ancient city simply disappeared beneath its own landscape.

Today, the modern town of Demre sits directly on top of this buried metropolis. Construction projects regularly encounter ancient foundations. Greenhouse farmers occasionally plough up Roman pottery or fragments of carved stone. The modern roads, houses, and the sea of plastic greenhouses that define Demre's economy all rest on layers of sediment concealing one of Lycia's greatest cities — a city that ancient sources compared favourably with Ephesus and Pergamon.

The Temple of Artemis Eleuthera

If there is a single lost monument that haunts the archaeology of Myra, it is the Temple of Artemis Eleuthera. Ancient sources — Strabo's Geographica, Pliny the Elder's Natural History — describe it as the most splendid building in all of Lycia. For a region studded with monumental architecture, from Xanthos to Patara to Olympos, that is an extraordinary claim. And yet the temple has never been found.

The deity herself is key to understanding the temple's importance. Artemis Eleuthera — "Artemis the Liberator" — was not the familiar Greek huntress with her bow and stag. She was a distinctly Lycian figure, a mother-goddess associated with fertility, nature, and civic protection. Her roots lie in the ancient Anatolian goddess tradition stretching back millennia before Greek colonisation, and she is closely connected to the figure of Eni Mahanahi who appears in Lycian-language inscriptions across the region. When the Greeks arrived and encountered this powerful local deity, they mapped her onto their own Artemis, but the Lycian character remained dominant. This was not a minor regional cult — Artemis Eleuthera was the patron goddess of Myra, the spiritual heart of one of Lycia's most important cities.

The evidence for the temple's existence and grandeur is compelling, even if the building itself remains hidden. Myra's coinage features Artemis Eleuthera's image prominently well into the 3rd century CE, a span of several hundred years during which her cult persisted alongside and even rivalled the Roman imperial cult. The Romans, pragmatic in matters of local religion, allowed the Artemis cult to continue — a testament to its political and social power. Dedicatory inscriptions to Artemis Eleuthera have been found reused in later Byzantine and medieval structures throughout Demre, along with architectural fragments: column drums of substantial diameter suggesting a large-scale building, Corinthian capitals of refined workmanship, inscribed architrave blocks, and dedicatory altars. These fragments were clearly salvaged from a monumental structure during later building periods, repurposed as cheap building material by people who no longer remembered or cared about the goddess they honoured.

Based on the size and style of these recovered architectural elements, scholars estimate the temple was comparable in scale to the Temple of Artemis at Sardis — one of the largest Greek temples ever built, with a footprint exceeding 45 by 100 metres. If this estimate is correct, the Temple of Artemis Eleuthera at Myra was not just a regional shrine but one of the great religious buildings of the ancient Mediterranean. Its location remains debated, but the consensus among the Akdeniz University excavation team points to the central-western area of modern Demre, near where the ancient agora is also believed to lie. The density of recovered fragments in this zone, combined with geophysical anomalies detected in ground-penetrating radar surveys, suggests that a major building complex awaits discovery beneath the greenhouses and houses of the modern town.

The Agora and Commercial Quarter

Every major Lycian-Roman city had an agora — a central public space that served as the civic, commercial, and social heart of the community. It was not simply a marketplace, though commerce was a core function. The agora was where the city governed itself, where legal disputes were settled, where public announcements were read, where citizens gathered for festivals, and where the physical monuments of civic pride — honorary statues, inscribed decrees, fountain houses — proclaimed the community's wealth and values to residents and visitors alike.

Myra's agora has never been found, but we can be confident it existed and that it was substantial. A city wealthy enough to build a 10,000-seat theatre and a temple described as the finest in Lycia would have had an agora to match. Geophysical surveys conducted by the Akdeniz University excavation team have identified a large open area with what appear to be colonnaded porticos in the zone between the visible theatre and the modern Demre town centre. The signatures are consistent with a major public square bounded by covered walkways — the classic agora plan found at comparable sites across Lycia and beyond.

Based on well-excavated analogues at nearby Lycian cities — Patara, Xanthos, Perge — Myra's agora would likely have included: a bouleuterion (council chamber) where the city's elected officials met; a stoa or multiple stoas (long covered walkways with colonnaded frontages) providing shade for merchants, philosophers, and gossips; individual merchant shops opening onto the colonnade; a public fountain house (nymphaeum) fed by the city's aqueduct; and numerous inscribed honorary stelae — stone pillars recording the names of benefactors, military honours, and civic decrees. Many of these inscribed stones may still survive beneath the sediment, potentially holding detailed records of Myra's political and social history that have never been read.

One especially intriguing possibility concerns the Lycian League. This remarkable federal democracy — often cited by scholars as an influence on the American Constitution — held its meetings at member cities on rotation. Myra, as one of the League's most powerful members with three votes (the maximum allocation), would have hosted some of these federal gatherings. The agora would have been the natural venue, making it not just a local civic centre but periodically the capital of an entire federal nation.

The Roman Baths

The Romans were compulsive bathers. Every city of any consequence in the Roman Empire had at least one major public bath complex — a thermae — and important cities often had several. Bathing was not simply about hygiene; it was a social institution as central to Roman daily life as the coffee house would become to 18th-century European society. Business deals were struck in the warm rooms, political alliances formed in the exercise yard, gossip exchanged in the cold plunge, and cultural events — poetry readings, musical performances, philosophical debates — held in the attached halls. A city of Myra's status, wealth, and population would have had at least one major thermae, and possibly two or three smaller neighbourhood baths as well.

The physical evidence for baths at Myra comes in fragments. During various construction projects in modern Demre, workers have uncovered hypocaust tiles — the distinctive small pillars (pilae) that supported a raised floor, creating a space beneath through which hot air circulated to heat the room above. This underfloor heating system is the signature technology of Roman baths, and its presence in Demre is strong evidence that a bath complex lies somewhere beneath the town. Water supply pipes of terracotta and lead have also been found, along with fragments of marble cladding consistent with the luxurious interior finish typical of Roman public baths.

The bath complex's location is a matter of educated guesswork. Two likely zones have been proposed: one near the ancient harbour road connecting Myra to its port at Andriake, where baths commonly served travellers and merchants arriving in the city; and another adjacent to the agora, where baths and the main civic square frequently formed an integrated complex in Roman urban planning. Comparable bath complexes at nearby Lycian cities give us a sense of what Myra's baths would have contained: a frigidarium (cold room with plunge pools), a tepidarium (warm transitional room), a caldarium (hot room, the heart of the complex), and a palaestra (open-air exercise yard, often with a colonnaded perimeter). The whole complex would have been faced in marble, decorated with mosaic floors, and ornamented with statuary — a display of civic luxury that proclaimed the city's wealth and Roman cultural credentials.

When the municipality was laying new water pipes near the Demre hospital in 2019, they hit what appeared to be a hypocaust floor — the distinctive pillar-supported flooring used in Roman baths. The find was documented by Akdeniz University but the pipes had to go in, so the remains were covered back up. Somewhere under that road, there's a bath complex.

The Sacred Way: Myra to Andriake

A monumental road once connected Myra to its harbour city at Andriake, approximately 5 kilometres to the south. This was no ordinary path. Ancient sources describe religious processions along this route during the annual festival of Artemis Eleuthera — elaborate civic-religious ceremonies in which priests, magistrates, musicians, and citizens processed from the temple in Myra to the harbour and back, a spectacle that reinforced both the goddess's authority and the city's communal identity. The road itself would have been paved with fitted stone blocks, wide enough for processional groups and wagon traffic, and flanked — as was standard Roman practice — by tombs and funerary monuments. The Romans buried their dead outside city walls, and major roads leading from cities were the preferred locations for tomb construction, ensuring that the monuments of the dead were seen by the maximum number of travellers.

Sections of this ancient road have been identified through aerial photography and ground survey work, but the route has never been systematically excavated. The modern D400 highway and the agricultural service roads connecting Demre to the coast roughly follow the ancient alignment, which speaks to the enduring logic of the landscape — the valley floor dictates the route from the mountain-backed city to the coastal harbour, today as it did two thousand years ago.

The road also has a notable association with early Christianity. Around 60 CE, the Apostle Paul, under Roman custody and being transported to Rome for trial, landed at Myra and transferred to an Alexandrian grain ship at the harbour of Andriake (Acts 27:5–6). He would almost certainly have walked this road between the city and the port — one of the few specific geographical details in Paul's journey that can be pinpointed with reasonable confidence. Fifteen hundred years later, the same road's ghosts would draw a different kind of pilgrim — the 19th-century European explorers and archaeologists who came to document Myra's visible ruins and wondered at the scale of what they could not see.

The Residential City

A city that could fill a 10,000-seat theatre had a substantial population. Estimates for Roman-era Myra range from 15,000 to 30,000 — a major city by ancient standards, comparable to provincial capitals across the Mediterranean world. These people needed places to live, work, eat, and conduct their daily business. The residential quarters of Myra — the houses, apartment blocks, workshops, and neighbourhood streets that made up the fabric of everyday urban life — occupied the valley floor in the area now covered by modern Demre.

Geophysical surveys using ground-penetrating radar have detected regular building foundations across a wide area beneath the modern town. The signatures suggest a planned urban layout with organised street grids and substantial stone-built structures — consistent with a prosperous Roman city rather than a haphazard settlement. Wealthier houses (domus) would have had mosaic floors, painted wall plaster, interior courtyards, and private water connections. Multi-storey apartment blocks (insulae) housed less affluent residents, while commercial workshops — potters, metalworkers, weavers, dyers — occupied ground-floor premises along main streets. The sheer density of buried structures detected in the surveys underscores the scale of what remains hidden.

The city's infrastructure was equally sophisticated. An aqueduct system brought fresh water from mountain springs in the hills north of Myra — sections of the stone-lined aqueduct channel are still visible in the landscape above the site, following the contours of the hillside as they guided water downhill into the city. Once inside the urban area, the water was distributed through a network of terracotta and lead pipes to public fountains, baths, and private connections. A complementary drainage system managed both rainwater and sewage, channelling waste through stone-lined drains beneath the streets and out to the river — fragments of these drains have been encountered during modern construction work. The combination of water supply and drainage infrastructure tells us that Roman Myra was not a picturesque ruin but a functioning, engineered urban environment with the kind of services that wouldn't become standard again in this region for another fifteen centuries.

Why It All Disappeared

The burial of Myra was not a single catastrophic event but a centuries-long geological process with periodic accelerations. Understanding why the city vanished helps explain what survives and what does not — and sets realistic expectations for what archaeology might eventually recover.

The fundamental mechanism is alluvial deposition. The Demre River — the ancient Myros, also called the Andrake — drains a substantial catchment in the Taurus Mountains. Every year, seasonal rains wash sediment downstream and deposit it on the valley floor. In a normal century, this process might raise the ground level by a few centimetres — barely noticeable in a human lifetime, but relentless over millennia. The earthquakes changed the pace dramatically. The 141 CE earthquake, which destroyed much of the theatre (subsequently rebuilt with funds donated by the philanthropist Opramoas of Rhodiapolis), also triggered massive landslides that dumped enormous volumes of hillside material into the valley. Many structures damaged in this quake were never fully rebuilt, and debris accumulation began in earnest.

The pattern repeated through the Byzantine period. Arab raids from the 7th to 9th centuries caused destruction that was only partially repaired. Damaged buildings collapsed, rubble accumulated, and new construction was built on top of the debris layer rather than excavating down to the original ground level — a common pattern in ancient cities, where successive occupation layers create the archaeological mounds (tells) that characterise sites across the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean. The catastrophic earthquake of 1044 CE was the decisive event, triggering landslides of a scale that buried large sections of the city in a single generation. By the time Ottoman-era travellers visited the area, only the cliff-face structures — the rock-cut tombs, the upper portions of the theatre, and the Church of St. Nicholas (continuously rebuilt and maintained by Christian communities) — remained visible. Everything at the ancient ground level had disappeared beneath metres of earth.

The rock-cut tombs survived precisely because they are carved into the living rock of the cliff face — they could not be buried unless the sediment rose to the height of the cliff itself. The theatre survived because its upper sections are built against the mountainside, with only the lower seating rows (now re-excavated) having been covered by sediment. The principle is simple: anything built upward from the valley floor was vulnerable to burial; anything carved into or built against the mountain was protected by its elevation.

Can It Be Excavated?

The short answer is: not easily, not quickly, and not without enormous cost and social disruption. The buried city of Myra presents one of the most complex archaeological challenges in the Mediterranean — not because the remains are inaccessible in any technical sense, but because they lie directly beneath an active, inhabited modern town.

The core problem is straightforward. The ancient city occupies the same valley floor as modern Demre. Greenhouses, houses, roads, water mains, sewage lines, electricity cables, and the daily infrastructure of a working town of 25,000 people sit on top of the archaeological remains. Full excavation of the buried city — the kind of wholesale clearance that revealed Pompeii, Ephesus, or Perge — would require relocating significant portions of Demre's built environment. That means displacing families and businesses, rerouting utilities, and finding alternative land for the greenhouse agriculture that is the town's economic backbone. The legal, financial, and social costs are prohibitive under current conditions.

Turkish antiquities law provides strong protections for archaeological sites. Any construction project that encounters ancient remains is required to halt and notify the local museum directorate. The Akdeniz University excavation team, which has led research at Myra for decades, maintains an ongoing programme of monitoring, survey, and opportunistic excavation — when a road is dug up, when a foundation trench is opened, when a greenhouse is relocated, the archaeologists are called in to document and, where possible, investigate whatever is revealed. This approach has yielded valuable data over the years, but it is necessarily fragmentary — a window here, a wall section there, a handful of pottery from this corner and a mosaic fragment from that one.

The more promising approach for the near and medium term is non-invasive survey technology. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography, and magnetometry can detect buried structures without disturbing the ground surface. These technologies have advanced enormously in recent decades, and the Akdeniz University team has used them to map substantial areas of the buried city. The result is an increasingly detailed picture of what lies beneath — building outlines, street alignments, open spaces, large structural anomalies that may correspond to public buildings — all recorded without moving a single shovel of earth. This "invisible excavation" creates a database that will guide future physical excavation whenever conditions allow.

There is also the question of time and precedent. Pompeii, the world's most famous buried city, was first discovered in 1748 and is still only about two-thirds excavated after nearly 280 years of intermittent work. Ephesus, Turkey's flagship archaeological site, has been under excavation since 1863 and is estimated at roughly 15 percent uncovered. Archaeological excavation of major urban sites is inherently a multi-generational project. Some researchers at Akdeniz University advocate explicitly for a "long game" strategy: systematic non-invasive mapping now, with physical excavation targeted at specific high-value areas in future decades as technology improves, funding becomes available, and urban planning evolves. The temple of Artemis Eleuthera, once its location is confirmed through survey, might be the first candidate for targeted deep excavation — a single, focused project that could yield spectacular results without requiring wholesale urban relocation.
